The Israeli- Palestinian conflict has been lasted for over 60 years since the explosion of the first Middle East War in 1948. Later in 1978, Egypt signed the Camp David Agreement with Israel, in which both sides clearly stated that they would not resort to violence or threatens to solve conflicts, in stead, any conflicts would be addressed through peaceful talks according to the United Nations Charter. Signing of this agreement marks that the principle contradiction in Middle East has transmitted from Arab-Israeli conflicts to Palestinian-Israeli conflicts. However, 32 years have past after the signing of this agreement, and such conflict hasn’t been solved yet.
According to some historical reasons and the current situation, there are many external and internal causes for the difficulties in solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On one side, there are inner conflicts from Palestine itself. Palestine has long been a divided country whose west bank used to be controlled by Abbs and the Gaza Strip controlled by Hamas. In 2007, after Hamas was elected as president, he drove Al Fatah, another important political strength out of the Gaza Strip. This practice actually made Palestine a more divided country and therefore weakened Palestine’s strength in fighting outside power. Without fiscal revenue, independent domestic supply of fuel and food, Hamas had a great difficulty in governing the Gaza Strip, therefore the national strength of Palestine was further weakened. On the other side, members of the parliament in Israel hold different attitudes toward the issue, some of them are mild while some are tough, therefore different parties all have influences on government’s decisions regarding this issue. Besides, stakeholders like the United States, Iran also participated in this conflict, and their participation made this situation more complicated.
With such conflict in suspense, the world community is exposed to huge instability. But we believe that such conflict can be finally resolved. And I believe the way out can be grouped into three major aspects.
Firstly, the key to peace is in the hands of Palestine and Israel themselves. In terms of the current conflict, if both sides have the sincerity for peaceful talk and would formulate policies and deal with problems in a proper way, then there will be chances for peaceful solution for this issue. One success example is the peaceful settlement of Egyptian-Israeli conflict. However, inner conflicts within both two countries are destructive enough to default an agreement. Up to now, the world community has put forward many solutions like “the Middle East Road Map for Peace” and “the Arab Peace Initiative”, both can help to build a peaceful Israeli-Palestinian region. The two sides should firstly cease fire, end violence, and the Palestine side should combat on Terrorism and carry out political reform, while the Israel side should retreat from Palestine area which they occupied since September 28th, 2000, and demolish its settlement spots built since March 2001. New borders should be redesigned and the world community should help Palestine to rebuild its country. In terms of the Jerusalem City, it can be divided into western part and eastern part and equally allocated to both the two countries. As long as both the two sides have the sincerity to sit down and have peaceful talks, can they finally find common grounds and finally foster the process of peaceful negotiation.
Secondly, inner unity within Palestine is of great significance. All parties within Palestine should notice that to retake its lost territory and to rebuild its country is the fundamental base to regain national rights. Palestinian has lived a depressed and deprived life for over 60 years, so all parties should take people’s interests as their priority and unit with each other to formulate a proper agreement that can solve their extra conflict.
Thirdly, the world community with the United States as the leader should stand out to help Palestine as this country is in a weak position both in military and economy. America should stop provide foreign aid to Israel. At the same time, the United Nations should call on people to protest against Israel’s violation of Palestinian’s human rights. In economic area, more investment should be made in Palestine to help them build more public infrastructure. What’s more important, education should be stressed to bring up a new generation of children who can rebuild this region without hatred to each other.
